Manilva Gets a Soaking:  Rain, Relief, and Hope for a Splashy Summer

Over the past few weeks, Manilva and the wider Costa del Sol have experienced a series of downpours that have left residents both surprised and, dare we say, a tad soggy. These unexpected showers have been a welcome sight for our parched region, which has been grappling with drought conditions for some time.

In late February, a DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos) brought significant rainfall to our area. Gaucín recorded nearly 72 litres per square metre, while our very own Manilva saw 38 litres in just a short span. These showers have provided much-needed relief to our reservoirs, with water levels rising and offering hope for a more hydrated future.

Just a few months ago, our reservoirs were echoing with the sounds of tumbleweeds. Early rainfall this year had failed to ease the drought in much of southern Spain, despite slight improvements in reservoir levels. Fast forward to now, and the recent rains have significantly boosted our water reserves, with the province's reservoirs now holding 172 hectometres of water, 74 more than the previous year.

With the swimming season on the horizon, many of us are crossing our fingers (and perhaps doing a rain dance or two) in hopes that these rains will lead to the lifting of water restrictions. After all, diving into a pool should be about refreshing swims, not a quest to avoid third-degree burns from sun-baked tiles.

So, here's to the rain that has graced our lands: may it continue just enough to keep our reservoirs full and our spirits high. And to the sun, we promise we'll welcome you back with open arms—just let us enjoy our replenished pools first!
